About

RSS, an acryonym for "Rich Site Summary" or "RDF [Resource Description Framework] Site Summary", is a means of delivering content over XML. RSS is generally reserved for syndicating news articles; however, it can be used to syndicate anything with a timestamp. An example of an uncommon use would be to monitor store availability for a popular game that just came out and is rarely in-stock. Using an application that a user has written to aggregate the data from different stores with a little XML coupled with an RSS news reader, it's possible to monitor store availability.

Although that example may teeter on towards the extreme end of uses for RSS, it does illustrate a valid point: it is a wonderful tool for staying current.

Many news sites also syndicate news stories in the form of RSS. Two popular sites, BBC and CNN, both have an RSS feed that you can plug into your client.
